What are Mini Dental Implants?

Mini Dental Implants

Mini dental implants are for people who are looking to replace lost teeth but do not want (or cannot receive) conventional restorations. Dentists have several options for replacing missing teeth including bridges, dentures, or dental implants. Bridges and dentures are false teeth, and they rest on the surface of the gums. Implants are inserted into the jawbone and are not removable. Many opt out because of the invasive surgery required for regular implants, and some lack the bone mass required in their jaw to hold the implants. That is why many are choosing mini dental implants, so here are a few things to know.

For regular implants, a surgical procedure is performed to place a titanium post into the jawbone, and the bone fuses around the post over the course of three to six months. Once fused, the implant is uncovered, and a small post is attached, which acts as an anchor for artificial teeth.

Mini dental implants have a similar structure to regular implants only smaller in form. The mini implants have two parts: a titanium post with a ball on the end and a socket with a rubber O ring that attaches the tooth to the post. Mini implants support most replacement teeth types---from dentures, to bridges, and fixed crowns---and they are also suitable for securing loose and lower arch dentures. Regular implants are 3.4 to 5.8 mm wide, while mini implants are 1.8 to 3.3 mm in diameter and 10 to 15 mm long.

Regular implants take months to install and require at least two dental appointments, and some require additional visits for bone-grafting to make sure enough bone is there to support the posts. However, many patients are unable to undergo invasive surgery and several appointments, or they have lost too much bone mass to receive the implant. In many cases, mini implants are the best option. Dentists can install them in one visit using local anesthesia and no sutures.

Mini implants require the same care as natural teeth---flossing daily and brushing twice a day. Gums may be sensitive after the procedure, so the use of a soft-bristled toothbrush is recommended.

Losing natural teeth can be traumatic and cause individuals to lose confidence in their smile, but mini implants allow them to speak and eat normally without affecting their daily routine. Ask the dentist if mini implants are right for you.
