Dental Discount Plans vs Insurance

Too many American’s are putting off going to the dentist because they either don’t have dental insurance, or they have an inadequate plan. It may not seem like a bad idea at first, skipping out your cleanings and checkups. But when you take a bite into your favorite ice cream and a sharp, shooting pain has you doubled over, you may be signing a different tune, because what was once a small filling is now a costly root canal. Not to mention, poor oral health has been linked to diabetes and heart disease.

In short, staying on top of your oral health is important not only for your mouth, but for your overall health. But monthly premiums can be too high, and paying out of pocket for your dental procedures can hurt almost as much as your tooth. Luckily, there are two options for your oral health care needs—insurance and dental discount plans.

Insurance

There are a large variety of different insurance plans ranging from individual plans, dppo, dhmo’s and group plans. In general, most insurance plans require a monthly premium or co-payments, and their set pricing makes it a little easier to predict your out-of-pocket expenses. With most plans, you’re restricted to a network of dentists to choose from. However, they usually cover preventative care such as cleanings and exams, and a portion of basic procedures (extractions, fillings and root canals). The downside to insurance is that monthly premiums and deductibles can be high, and even after that your out-of-pocket for procedures are still high. It’s also near to impossible to get coverage for a preexisting condition. So if you’re in pain and your dentist is telling you that you need a crown, and you don’t have insurance, it’s too late to get it.

Discount Dental Plans

A dental discount plans is not an insurance plan. However, like insurance, the dental discount plan does cover two cleanings per year, and that’s about where the similarities stop. There are no monthly premiums, claim forms or waiting periods. With a dental discount plan, you receive a 20% discount on dental procedures. It’s kind of like buying a Costco membership. You’re buying the membership and are then able to enjoy the discounts. The dental discount plan is a great alternative for those who have preexisting conditions. In most cases, the dental discount plans works out to be less money out-of-pocket than traditional insurance coverage.
