How the Wrong Mouthwash Could Have Negative Effects
Brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash has been the routine we have been told since we were little kids about how to keep our mouth, teeth, and gums healthy. Even though this is what we have always been told, new findings have shown that using the wrong type of mouthwash can actually do more harm than good when it comes to properly caring for the mouth. The possibly good news is that the “wrong” type of mouthwash all depends on the individual’s oral health and oral health concerns.
Types of Mouthwash
There are generally two categories of mouthwash – cosmetic and prescription. Cosmetic mouthwash is usually purchased over-the-counter at the local grocery store, department store, or pharmacy. Both cosmetic and prescription mouthwashes help remove debris from between teeth either before or after brushing has taken place and also temporarily relieve bad breath while leaving a pleasant taste. Most importantly, both of these products help reduce the amount of bacteria in the mouth.
In addition to all the uses listed above, prescription mouthwashes are prescribed by a dentist and may have additional ingredients. These additions are often used as a means to treat or prevent a specific type of oral issue, such as an infection, gum disease, or another oral ailment.
