Blame for Jaw Pain

Posture May Be Linked to Jaw Pain and Headaches

Some of the most common pain complaints people have are jaw pain and headaches. While there may be many reasons for this type of pain, one that patients and doctors alike do not consider is the patient's posture. Those experiencing pain in their lower jaw and frequent headaches should first consult with their dentist and inquire about temporomandibular disorder, or TMD, and also make sure they are practicing proper posture when walking and, most importantly, sitting down.

What is Temporomandibular Joint and Temporomandibular Disorder?

The temporomandibular joint is what hinges the lower jaw to the temporal bones in the skull, found just in front of each ear. This joint allows us to move our jaws up and down as well as side to side, making it possible for us to chew and talk. When individuals have problems with their jaw and the muscles surrounding it, it is referred to as a temporomandibular disorder.

Poor Posture and Temporomandibular Disorder

Individuals with poor posture are placing their spine in a position that causes stress on the jaw joint. When we hunch over or slouch, the lower jaw is forced forward, which causes the upper and lower teeth to not fit together properly and also causes the skull to move back on the spinal column. This type of movement also puts stress on the muscles, bones, and joints.

When stress on the muscles, bones, and joints is left untreated, it can cause pain and inflammation in the muscles and joints in the jaw. We have always been told how important good posture is, but many do not realize it until it begins to cause them pain. When an individual’s posture is unbalanced, it can rearrange the position of the facial muscles, which can cause the grooves and bumps on the upper and lower teeth to not fit together properly, not only causing pain but also causing oral issues.

Treating Jaw Pain and Headaches from Poor Posture

It is important for individuals experiencing these issues to consult their dental professional. It is possible that the dentist will recommend an oral appliance to help align the teeth into the proper position, which will ultimately help ease the facial pain caused by poor posture. In addition to reducing pain, this appliance also helps prevent any future damage to the teeth. And check your posture! Having poor posture can cause problems for more than just your back!
