What You Should Know About Biofilms
Biofilm and Your Mouth
The human mouth is made up of many natural bacteria and, as a result, a number of different biofilms can build up on teeth. The mouth contains a wide array of these microorganisms, some of which the human body cannot live without. It is easy for us to think of bacteria as something “bad,” but many of these so-called germs are important to help keep the body healthy. “Biofilm” is a term used to describe how bacteria are organized and live in complex groups – these groups of bacteria help create an ideal environment in which the bacteria can survive and protect against other, “bad” bacteria.
Good vs. Bad Bacteria
The mouth will always contain bacteria, many of which are needed to help prevent viruses, fungi, and bad bacteria from invading the soft tissues, gums, and tooth structures. “Good” bacteria help to control oral inflammation that can be caused by an excess of “bad” bacteria, which is important since excessive oral inflammation can be bad for one’s oral health. Bad bacteria thrive in an acidic environment, which can lead to tooth decay – “good” bacteria are important for ensuring these acidity levels remain low.
Increasing “Good” Bacteria
Since good bacteria are important for both oral health and overall health, scientists are looking at how probiotics can increase the number of good bacteria in the mouth’s biofilms. Probiotics are famously known for helping to increase the number of good bacteria in the digestive tract, and more of these bacteria that are found in the mouth can mean a patient is less likely to have to deal with the “bad” bacteria that can cause gum inflammation and other oral issues, such as tooth decay or gum issues.
Why Oral Hygiene is Important
One way patients can maintain a proper level of good bacteria and ensure their biofilms are made up of primarily healthy organisms is by keeping a good oral hygiene routine. Some of the components of a good oral hygiene routine include flossing daily, making sure to remove debris from between each tooth as well as along the gum line, brushing twice daily using a silica toothpaste, and potentially using a mouthwash to help eliminate bad bacteria from the mouth not already taken care of. Additionally, it is important for patients to have regular dental visits every six months for a cleaning and to also address any oral issues they may have.
