What to Know About Throat Yeast Infections
For most of us, the only time we think of yeast is when we look at the label on our favorite bread. However, while yeast is mostly thought of as something positive, when it comes to our health, yeast is not something you want mentioned.
Technically called oropharyngeal candidiasis (or oral thrush), the condition develops in some people’s throat or mouth. It is often missed, but we are going to try to make you more familiar with the symptoms so you can get it properly treated if someone in your home is suffering from these symptoms.
Am I Likely to Get an Oral Yeast Infection?
Realistically, no. If you are an overall healthy person, the cases are rather rare, but those with immune problems are significantly more likely to have an oral yeast infect, as are infants and the elderly.
The CDC reports that roughly 5-7 percent of infants under the age of one month, 20 percent of cancer patients, and as many as 31 percent of those infected with the AIDS virus will experience an oral yeast infection.
Common Symptoms
In some cases, the infection is asymptomatic and the person suffering from it does not even realize they have the infection. However, there are more than a few symptoms that may be present that will have you headed to the doctor:
·Burning in throat or mouth
·Itching in throat or mouth
·Difficulty swallowing
·White spots on tongue or roof of mouth
·Cracking and/or redness on corners of mouth
·Red area in center of tongue
How Is a Yeast Infection Treated?
In most cases, your doctor will treat the oral infection with Nystatin, which is taken orally via liquid or capsule form. If the infection is non-responsive, he or she will more than likely step up the treatment to a more powerful antifungal medication.
How to Prevent Oral Yeast Infections
Your frontline defense against oral infections is to have a good oral hygiene program in place. Brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing, and using a deep-cleaning mouthwash. Obviously, you also want to get to the dentist at least twice a year as well, possibly more frequently if you have a condition that makes you more susceptible to oral infections.
