What Is Causing My Facial Pain?
Do you have times where you feel a sharp pain on an area of
your face? This is one of those things where the sharp pain could be nothing, signs
of a health problem, and yes, signs of an oral health problem. Because it can
be a bit confusing, we have some information we put together that will hopefully
enable you to narrow down the actual cause and have it addressed as soon as
possible
Headaches
If you have ever had a migraine, you know how unbearable they can be. You just want to lock yourself in a room with the lights out, the blinds closed, and pray that it goes away. Consistent headaches are one of those things that could be from a host of problems, including your teeth. We recommend seeing a doctor if the problem persists.
Dental Abscess
This is an infection in your tooth, usually due to advanced tooth decay, a cracked tooth, or gum disease, and the pain from it is usually rather immense. Some of the signs of this are a steady throbbing pain, an off taste in your mouth, red gums, swelling, and even a fever. This is very serious and something you need to see your dentist about right away.
Dry Socket
This is most often associated with something that happens after an extraction. The blood clot is either displaced or does not form properly after having a tooth pulled. Like an abscess, signs of this condition are swelling, an off taste in your mouth, and/or a fever. Again, you will need to see your dentist right away to have this dealt with immediately.
Sinus Infections
These infections do not only cause pain your sinuses, but that pain can reverberate throughout your face due to pressure mounting around your eyes, ears, and cheeks. You may also have very bad breath and a fever. This is one of those conditions that is not actual a dental issue but can be misconstrued as such due the proximity of your upper molars to the sinus cavity (you may have pain in your teeth, but it is not actually dental pain). Even though it may appear to be a dental issue, this is one for your regular doctor.
Temporomandibular Joint Disorders
In its simplest terms, this is a condition that will cause you problems trying to open and/or close your mouth. With that difficulty, mouth pain comes along for the ride. This is often caused by the constant grinding of your teeth or a misaligned bite. If you start to notice a clicking or popping sound in your jaw, make a dental appointment and let him or her know what is going on.
