What is a Silver Filling?
Information on Dental Amalgam
Most individuals identify dental amalgams as “silver fillings” – these fillings are a combination of silver, copper, tin, and mercury to help fill the holes and gaps left by dental issues such as decay or cavities. Mercury comprises about 50 percent of the composite that is used to fill teeth and helps to bind the other metals present in the compound together while also creating a strong, durable filling. Years of research has revealed that mercury is the only substance that is able to bond these metals together while also being easily manipulated and easy to use when filling the hole left by a cavity.
Is Mercury Safe?
The mercury that is used in silver fillings is not toxic and when it is mixed together with the other metals in the compound, its chemical make-up is altered and it becomes more or less harmless. The mercury that is released into the mouth as a result of biting or chewing is a very, very small amount and should not cause issues for any person. Generally, the amount of mercury released during this process is less than what we are exposed to in the air we breathe and the water and food we consume.
Why are Silver Fillings Used?
Silver fillings are still used by dentists today because they have consistently worked well for a long period of time, which is why it is still the material of choice. Silver fillings have been used for the last 150 years and are still considered to be one of the most durable, strongest, and safest materials to use when it comes to filling the holes left behind by drilling cavities. Additionally, dentists will use silver fillings over other alternative materials because it is much easier to work with and manipulate as needed.
Are there Alternatives to Silver Fillings?
There are some alternatives to silver fillings dentists can use, but often times these materials are harder to work with and are most costly for the patient. Some of these alternatives include porcelain, cast gold, or composite resin. Porcelain and gold castings often require the patient to come back for a second dental appointment in order to complete the filling where silver fillings are often a one appointment procedure. Composite resins are a very popular alternative since they are aesthetically more appealing than silver or gold, but they are also not as durable as silver fillings are proven to be.
