Tooth Decay: Can Milk Reduce It?
Consuming Milk Can Help Reduce Decay Caused by Sugar
A research study published by the American Dental Association suggests that drinking milk after consuming sugary foods may decrease the damage these foods can cause the teeth. When a food that is high in sugar is consumed, the bacteria in plaque produces acid on the teeth that causes tooth decay. Scientists at the School of Dentistry for the University of Illinois have finished an experiment to decide if consuming milk, water, or apple juice after eating a sugar-filled cereal can affect the acidity of plaque.
Twenty subjects that were part of the study visited the university’s campus one per week for a period of six weeks. A random order was established using a computerized system where subjects were assigned to completely different test search weeks using different control methods. During these weekly visits, the subjects rinsed their mouths with a controlled solution of sorbitol or sugar or ate a sugar cereal and followed with drinking apple juice, whole milk, water, or nothing at all.
The researchers made note of the acidity levels in the subjects’ plaque at calculated intervals for a period of 30 minutes for those groups who did not drink anything and also at calculated intervals for a period of 35 minutes for those who drank apple juice, whole milk, or water. During these measurements, it was found that the subjects who drank whole milk after consuming or rinsing with a sugary substance had significantly lower acidity levels in their plaque than those groups who drank other substances.
While milk may help reduce the acidity and subsequently the tooth decay that occurs from eating sugary foods, it is still important to consume these foods in moderation. Foods with a high sugar content are a very common cause of tooth decay, which is why they should only be regarded as an occasional treat. Additionally, eating these foods in moderation help patients maintain a healthy, balanced diet, as does eating a variety of foods from the five major food groups.
