Oral ‘Tools’ to Promote Gum Health
Most of us know our dentists recommend brushing twice daily as well as flossing. But, everyone is different, and using regular toothpaste may cause tenderness or even bleeding during regular brushings. Finding the right toothpaste and "tools" is the best way to ensure you are properly taking care of your teeth and gums.
Why Are My Gums Tender and/or Bleeding After Brushing?
In many cases, this is a sign of some type of gum disease, such as gingivitis. Toothpastes with strong flavoring will actually make this condition worse rather than better. In many cases, while the condition is being addressed, you may need medically approved products from your dentist.
Toothpaste Ingredients
Fluoride – this is one of the key ingredients for toothpaste and is must be in toothpaste in order to get the approval of the ADA. If you have sensitive gums, make sure you are using a non-flavored fluoride toothpaste when brushing.
Potassium Nitrate – this is something that is not in every toothpaste, but it is often recommended by dentists for patients that have sensitive gums/teeth as well as tooth repair from weakened enamel. The potassium nitrate in the toothpaste helps to block nerve pathways on the surface of the tooth to the inner pulp, which is where that pain sensation comes from. Over time, the teeth become less sensitive and the pain will no longer spread to the gum sockets.
Other Dental Products to Consider
Toothbrush - just as important as the type of toothpaste you use to brush your teeth is the brush that is used. A harder bristled brush will only aggravate sensitive teeth and gums, so you will want to use a softer bristled brush.
Tongue Scraper – some toothbrushes today will actually feature a scraper on them, but you can also buy them separately if your brush does not have one. To properly clean your tongue, wash out your mouth, then begin at the back of the tongue and work your way forward. Make sure you clean the sides as well as the middle of the tongue. Rinse both your mouth and tongue scraper when you are done.
Mouthwash
– most popular brands today will over several different
categories of mouthwash. For instance, Colgate offers an “Advanced Health”
mouthwash as well as a “Gum Health.” Listerine offer a “Total Care Whitening”
as well an “Ultra Clean” and “Healthy White” version of its mouthwash products.
Chewing Gum
– first and foremost, make sure you are chewing a sugarless gum.
Chewing gum can help decrease tooth sensitivity and will also help you produce more
saliva, which helps fend off mouth bacteria (which of course leads to tooth
decay). The saliva will also help to naturally “wash” your teeth in between
meals.
