New Teething Toys for New Teeth
Per the American Dental Association, children
can start teething around four to seven months. While teething, babies may
become a little fussier and a little more irritable. However, as a parent it’s important
to be cautious regarding teething toys. Not all teething products are good for babies,
so remember these products for healthier, safer solutions.
Cool Toys
Rather than buy gel or liquid filled
teething rings, according to Medline Plus, try rubber or plastic toys that can
be placed in the fridge. Teething is often painful, so applying cold (not frigid)
temperatures to a child’s gums can reduce swelling. Try to find toys that
remain flexible when cold. Children should be able to chew on their toys to
soothe any sensitive areas.
Mesh Feeders
If a baby is more than six months old, a
mesh feeder can also be used for teething. All parents need to do is add
chilled fruit, such as strawberries and bananas, into the bag and seal the top.
Cool food is perfect for soothing a baby’s swollen gums, and the mesh lets
enough pulp and flavor pass through the bag, thereby helping shape the child’s
palate while providing comfort during his or her teething phase.
Teething Blanket
Teething blankets are great for soothing
babies during their teething phase whether it’s to soothe their gums or to provide
something warm for comfort. Most blankets are soft with rubberized caps that babies
can chew and hug all at once. These are great for helping them settle down
during naps or bedtime. Some blankets may also feature different textures to
help relieve their gums and provide variety.
Buzzing Toys
Another teething toy that’s great for
sore gums, and is also one of the newest, are toys that vibrate and shake, some
of them only buzzing when the baby bites down. Make sure the teether is made of
soft pliable material, is comfortable for the child, and is specifically
designed as a teething toy. Children often enjoy chewing on their teether at
home, in their car seat, or in their stroller.
Toothbrushes and Cloths
If you don’t have time to run to the baby
store, there are household items and other home remedies that can suffice in a
pinch. Before testing out the teething blanket, consider using cold rags. Some
parents have mentioned chilling a wet rag dipped in chamomile tea as a teething
toy. There are also toothbrushes for babies to chew on safely. A soft bristled
brush can help massage their gums and help with their discomfort. As long as the
child’s comfort is the priority, parents should have a happy baby.
