Natural Ways to Help Clean Your Teeth
The “Natural” Ways to Keep Teeth and Gums Healthy
The “natural” lifestyle trend has definitely gained momentum over the last few years as more and more consumers are looking for safer, more natural alternatives to the foods and products they use every day. For those who are looking for a more natural method of approaching oral health, there are a number of different products on the market for them to try. Regardless of which one they choose, it is important to remember that “natural” solutions for keeping healthy teeth and gums will never replace the age old methods of flossing, brushing regularly, and using mouthwash to keep the mouth healthy.
Are Natural Oral Hygiene Products Safe to Use?
While natural oral care products are generally safe for consumers to use, it is important to keep in mind that manufacturers and dentists alike are still trying to determine which “natural” ingredients are the most effective in cleaning teeth and gums and helping to prevent gum disease and cavities. Fluoride is the only ingredient thus far that has been approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) to help fight cavities, and this ingredient is included in all toothpastes with the ADA’s Deal of Acceptance.
Oils, Teas, and Peroxide
Some individuals turn to basic natural and herbal substances for their oral hygiene and have seen some success with cleaning their teeth and gums. Some of these products include:
- Peroxide (carefully diluted) can help to fight off certain types of bacteria, but it is important to dilute the substance with water to help prevent burning the gums.
- Baking Soda has been shown to be effective in battling tooth decay.
- Rinsing with Green Tea Extract can help to keep the teeth from eroding and could potentially help to keep starchy foods from causing tooth decay – it was also shown that those who regularly drink green tea have much healthier gums.
- Xylitol is a common alcohol used in place of sugar, which may help to limit tooth decay.
- Eucalyptol , Tea Tree and Menthol Oil help kill bacteria found in the mouth, which helps to keep gums from becoming inflamed (most mouthwashes and/or toothpastes include these ingredients).
- Vitamin D is used to fight bacteria throughout the body, which in turn is beneficial for oral health. Studies have shown that those who are Vitamin D deficient are more likely to contract gum disease and other oral issues.
