Reinforcing Weak Enamel on Teeth

While there are many aspects that make up a healthy mouth, it is important to remember that weak enamel on the teeth can leave them vulnerable and can often lead to oral health issues down the road. Having strong tooth enamel is an important consideration when it comes to proper mouth care, and making sure this enamel is protected should be a priority. For those who are concerned about weak enamel on their teeth, there are some ways to strengthen this protective layer.

Enamel makes up the outermost layer of the tooth and acts as the tooth’s first line of defense against bacteria, decay, and disease as well as physical damage to the teeth. While enamel can weaken over time, due to illnesses or genetics, it cannot be regrown or regenerated after this protective layer has been lost. For those patients who are experiencing weak tooth enamel and are concerned about the health of their teeth and mouth, here are some tips to help strengthen and reinforce the existing enamel.

  1. Follow Proper Oral Hygiene : For those who are beginning to experience sensitivity when eating or brushing (often the first sign of weakening enamel), it is important to make a dental appointment as soon as possible. Brushing too hard or using a toothbrush with bristles that are too hard for the teeth can cause enamel to break down. Make sure to consult with a dental professional about your concerns, and ask for any help you need in choosing the right toothbrush for your teeth.
  2. Avoid Foods that Break Down Enamel : Certain foods and foods containing specific ingredients can often be the cause of weakening enamel. “Fermentable carbohydrates” in food combine with the bacteria found naturally in the mouth to create acid, which in turn breaks down enamel on the teeth. Foods such as cookies, sodas, teas, bread, bananas, crackers, and other similar foods all contain fermentable carbohydrates and should be consumed with caution.
  3. Use Remineralizing Products : For those who are experiencing enamel loss or weakening of enamel, remineralizing products can often be helpful in strengthening the tooth’s protective layer. One of the best ways to do this is by using a mineral fluoride to help fortify enamel. Additionally, consuming fluoridated water and using topical fluorides, as recommended by a dental professional, can also be helpful in helping strengthen and protect teeth’s enamel.
