There are plenty of ways to give yourself a boost of confidence, and a healthy smile is one feature that always makes a big impression. For someone who has extra or supernumerary teeth, finding this boost of confidence isn’t always easy, but fortunately there are both gradual and immediate treatments that may be available, including extractions, straightening, and whitening. So, no matter the type of smile you have, learn how to smile without reservation with the information below!

Condition

Most adults have 32 teeth, and this includes eight incisors, four canines, eight premolars, and 12 molars. Hyperdontia is when an individual has more than 32 teeth. This can happen in your lower or upper teeth, but the National Institute of Health (NIH) has reported that hyperdontia most often occurs in the top row of teeth.

There are three types of hyperdontia: conical, tuberculate, and supplemental. Conical teeth are small and peg-shaped and can break near the central upper incisors. Tuberculate teeth, on the other hand, are barrel-shaped, and they can develop in the maxillary region behind the front row of teeth. Supplemental teeth are just behind the canines and resemble regular teeth.

Causes

Researchers are still considering the specific cause for hyperdontia, but, as per the NIH, this condition may be hereditary. Hyperdontia often occurs alongside Gardner’s syndrome, which is a condition that creates several internal polyps, or even alongside other chromosomal-based genetic syndromes. For example, according to the New South Wales Government Health (NSW), children who are born with a cleft palate are more likely to have hyperdontia.

Having these supernumerary teeth can cause dental crowding, delayed teeth eruption, fusion, and tumors or cysts. They can also be prone to decay and cavities. When supernumerary teeth first emerge, it’s often between molars or the incisors. Initially, they may look like impacted wisdom teeth.

Treatment and Care

To treat hyperdontia, dentists may mention orthodontia, which specifically deals with abnormalities of the teeth and jaw. An orthodontist may suggest corrective surgery, extraction, or braces to prevent any gaps. While talking with a dental health professional, you may also want to discuss a whitening solution.

If you can’t get extra teeth extracted, a brighter smile can help. You can have this done professionally by your dentist or with at-home treatment. Brighter teeth can make a big difference and make a great first impression. This should provide you with the extra dose of confidence you seek and should encourage you to maintain better oral hygiene. Ultimately, so long as you maintain good oral health, you should have full confidence in your smile.
