Does your tongue just not feel right? Are you noticing different types of spots, sores, or just general pain on your tongue? You may have a tongue lesion and it if it has been going on for some time, you may need to make a visit to your dentist ASAP.

Causes of Tongue Lesions

Bacterial/Fungal/Viral Infection – for viral infections, such as hairy leukoplakia or herpes vesicles, you may see signs of an infection on the side of the tongue. An overgrowth of candida albicans can result in a fungal infection, which is usually visible on the top of the tongue. Those already suffering from TB, syphilis, or scarlet fever may have a bacterial infection as a side effect of their condition.

Cancer Related – white or gray patches under the tongue can sometimes be associated with leukoplakia. These cannot be wiped away with normal tongue-cleaning tools. Leukoplakia is also associated with squamous cell carcinoma, a condition that presents itself on the dorsum and side of the tongue.

Immune Disorders – canker sores and lichen planus are often present on those with immune disorders. While they are often chronic, they are also usually benign. Signs of the these type of lesions are an itching or burning sensation.

Diet – a diet lacking in vitamins and iron can cause an irritated (red) tongue.

Medical Conditions – individuals with conditions such as Down Syndrome and Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome can have what would look like an abnormal tongue, but that is a result of the condition and is untreatable. For instance, “scrotal tongue” is often present in these conditions and is described a tongue with very deep grooves.

How to Treat a Tongue Lesion

If the lesion appears to be cancerous, a biopsy will need to be done to check the lesion. If caught early enough, there should not be any pain associated with the lesion. Once cancer is ruled out, the dentist may prescribe a special mouthwash to treat the condition or a topical steroid.

In some cases, your dentist may have to refer you to your primary physician for more care, especially if the lesions are associated with some other health condition.

What Can You Do?

A strong oral hygiene program is your best defense. For something like scrotal tongue, bacteria can get into the tongue grooves, so you want to make sure you are brushing your tongue every time you brush your teeth. We would highly recommend discussing the best toothbrush and cleaning tools to use with your dentist before doing anything on your own.
