How Braces Can be Affordable for Adults

Orthodontics, while a great teeth-straightening treatment, is expensive for most people and out of their reach for the most part. However, that is no reason to give up trying because there are various ways for adults to afford braces for themselves or for any children they have who need orthodontic treatment. So, here are a few of the ways to acquire orthodontic treatment for a reasonable, more affordable price.

Traditional Braces

Compared to lingual braces or Invisalign, traditional metallic braces are by far the most affordable option. While not the prettiest of orthodontic treatments, traditional braces are equally effective in treating most if not all orthodontic issues. They are also much lighter than they once were and less jarring of an adjustment. Out-of-pocket costs for traditional braces can add up to around $5,000 without dental insurance, but more minor problems and even partial dental coverage can lower these expenses a great deal.

Payment Plans

Most orthodontists’ practices have payment plans for their patients who do not have dental insurance. For instance, numerous clinics partner up with finance companies to provide flexible options for payment costing less than typical credit financing. Patients may choose plans that have little or no interest and that are payable up to two years.

Orthodontic School Clinics

Rather than going to a standard orthodontic clinic, you can always try an institution. There are many U.S. dental schools that take patients on specific days, so students can participate in supervised treatments, which are part of orthodontic education. The Commission on Dental Accreditation has a list of such schools throughout the US. The expenses are often far lower, as only a partial payment is necessary for the cost of the equipment and the materials.

Credit Options

Regular credit finance like credit cards or personal loans is another payment option for orthodontic treatment. While this method would cost more, due to accruing interest, than the other payments options, the repayments can be spread out over as long a time as a person can negotiate with his or her bank.

Assistance Programs

Most states offer dental assistance programs as help for lower-income families, so they can get the proper dental coverage they require. Assistance can even be provided by nonprofit organizations. For instance, North Carolina’s Dental Health Fund pays for short-term dental treatments through its Missions of Mercy program. Some of the other options include free clinics headed by dental and medical volunteers as well as grants for covering expenses you may be unable to handle under unexpected circumstances.
