How to Decide If You Need to Whiten

Those professionals who work at dental offices often get a very simple, yet complicated, question – “Should I be whitening my teeth?” The answer to this question will not be the same for everyone as all people have a unique mouth, teeth, and gums that require personalized care. Along with this first question come the many other questions like “Can I use at home whiteners?” “Are there any negative side effects to whitening teeth?” “How often should I whiten?” “What results can I expect?”

Regardless of what the question is, there is no one specific answer for every person. Like many things in life, teeth whitening is a good treatment for some people and may not be right for others.

Different Types of Teeth Whitening

Every smile is different, so different methods of whitening may work better for some and not as well for others. For example, whitening toothpaste from the drugstore may be enough to whiten someone’s smile by a few shades while this product may not work at all for others. On the other hand, professional whitening may be too powerful for some people’s teeth while causing no problems and adding significant whiteness for others. There are a number of different methods out there, so always consult with a dental professional before using one.

Keeping Your Smile White After Whitening

For those who do decide to whiten their teeth, either professionally or with an at home method, it is important they do not undo all the work they have already done. Make sure to stay away from foods and drinks that cause teeth to stain easily, like red wine and coffee. Also, using tobacco can yellow teeth, making a whitening treatment pointless. For those who can’t skip the morning coffee, consider using a straw to help avoid having the liquid come in contact with the surface of the teeth.

Always Practice Good Oral Hygiene

The best and safest way for people to whiten their smiles is to practice a good oral hygiene routine. Always make sure to brush teeth and floss daily to keep teeth healthy and visit the dentist regularly for a deep cleaning and an oral exam as well as practicing healthy eating habits – we all love sweets but too much is not good for our teeth or our waistline! While white teeth may be attractive, healthy, strong teeth will last someone their entire lifetime and that is what is truly important with our oral health.

Treatments such as this can be very expensive, especially if you do not have any type of dental insurance. However, plans like the Wellness Dental Plan can help you save as much as 20 percent off your dental bills. For more information on discount dental plans such as this, please click here.
