Dental Concerns for Teens
As most parents know, the teen years for a child might as well back up to the bank and empty the vault. Dental issues are generally included in this, but there are some things which parents should be particularly concerned when it comes to their teens and their oral health.
Braces
Today, braces are not as intrusive for teens as they once were. The advances in dental care specifically in this area are actually quite incredible. While some cases still demand the use of the traditional metal braces, there are other less obvious methods dentists can use to straighten your teen’s teeth. If you are noticing some alignment problems with your teen, now is the time to bring it up to your dentist, so the problems can be rectified as soon as possible. And, hopefully, cost far less money.
Eating Disorders
Millions of Americans are plagued by eating disorders and sadly, far too many of them are teenagers. While there is the obvious overall health concern, eating disorders can also lead to oral health problems. Not eating properly can lead to gum issues. In addition, conditions such as bulimia can cause the erosion of tooth enamel due to the stomach acids eating away at it. This is something that should not only be addressed with your doctor and dentist, but you should also seek counseling for your teen.
Mouth Jewelry
Body modifications are becoming more and more popular these days. In addition to body piercings and tattoos, mouth piercings are seen more and more. That being the case, parents of teens that have mouth piercings have every right to be concerned about how this will impact their teen’s oral health. Of major concern is infections in and around the piercing area, which could possibly lead to hepatitis or endocarditis. A secondary concern is accidentally biting down on the mouth jewelry, possibly cracking a tooth.
Smoking
It goes without saying that smoking is dangerous, but we also know peer pressure often results in teens smoking around their friends. Parents should have an honest sit down with their children to find out if they are smoking. Something even more troubling can be smokeless tobacco. The problems arising from dip, snuff, and chewing tabaco can be just as tragic for youngsters. Rather than freaking out, parents would be better served to work with their teen to quit the habit.
