An Adult’s Best Options for Orthodontics

When most people imagine someone wearing braces, they likely think of high-schoolers with the metal brackets and the multi-colored rubber bands. However, this procedure is not only limited to kids and young adults. In fact, many adults in their early twenties and onward are discovering the opportunities available for them that they may not have had as children to fix their misaligned teeth. Adult braces are actually becoming quite popular due to innovations like invisible and clear braces being more readily available, allowing adults to straighten their teeth without filling their mouths with metal.

Why Do I Need Braces?

Individuals get orthodontic braces for themselves and their children for many reasons, including one or more of the following:

· Misaligned or crooked teeth : This can impede potentially healthy bites as well as causing excessive jaw problems, chipped teeth, and general tooth wear.

· Small or large mouth : Small mouths can result in tooth crowding whereas large mouths can result in larger spaces between teeth.

· Not liking their smile : Many people merely don’t like how their smiles look and want their teeth to look more even or straighter.

Options for Braces

Whenever you visit the orthodontist, it may benefit you to ask them about the available options for straightening teeth as an adult. You can choose an option that best suits your lifestyle—from traditional metal braces, which adhere to the teeth via a type of cement, to the growingly popular removable aligners, which are also called invisible braces.

Removable aligners can be worn in the daytime and at night and then removed whenever necessary for special events or business meetings. If you choose to wear invisible braces, an orthodontist needs to take a teeth mold to create clear, specialized trays that will fit perfectly with your mouth. Because they’re removeable, anybody who works with customers or many co-workers won't need to agonize about lisping in front of other people.

Clear braces are another option, requiring the orthodontist to install them directly onto your teeth just as they would with traditional braces. This type of orthodontia is less noticeable due to the brackets and its other parts being completely clear. Either way, speak with an orthodontist about the option you think would work best for you.
