Adult Dental Care and Prevention

As children, we are often warned about cavities and regular brushing to prevent them, so it is only natural to assume that as we enter adulthood, we can put those cares behind us. If this characterizes your approach to dental care, you need to think again. Many dental problems adults did not have to contend with when they were younger are now crucial as they’ve aged. Some examples may make you think twice before cancelling that next dental checkup.

Oral Cancers

Men over the age of 40 have the highest risk for oral cancer, according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. As well, approximately 36,000 people will get cancer of the throat area, mouth, or tongue, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). ACS estimates that around 6,850 of these people will die from these cancers. The use of alcohol and tobacco products increases their risk of oral cancer, but, fortunately, most oral cancers are first diagnosed by dentists during routine checkups.

Temporomandibular Joint Problems

Grinding teeth and bite irregularities can lead to painful temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems. Having teeth extracted can cause the teeth in one’s mouth to shift position significantly and alter bite. After time, the joints responsible for the movement of the jaw can cause the jaw to lock. This is one reason for the importance of dental implants. Grinding of the teeth can wear down the teeth’s enamel, but dentists can make night guards for those who grind their teeth while sleeping.

Periodontal Disease

Patients lose more teeth to periodontal disease than to tooth decay after age 35. If their care routine of flossing and teeth brushing isn’t consistent or they’ve skipped regular dental cleanings, tartar and bacterial plaque can build up on the teeth. The tartar and plaque can cause damage to the jawbone and support structures. Teeth can start to loosen, and periodontal surgery may be required to prevent tooth loss. Luckily, this is a preventable disease in many cases.

Dental Fillings Break Down

The life expectancy is eight to ten years for dental fillings. However, with proper care, they can last 20 years or longer. When fillings start to break down, bacteria and food can get underneath them. Decay can then occur and negatively affect nerves in the teeth. Your only option may be to have a root canal treatment or a full crown put in if the tooth structure breaks down along with the filling.

Preventative Care is Best

The best course of action for your adult dental care needs is preventative maintenance. As an adult, you are far from immune to dental issues and problems. In addition to maintaining proper home care, the best thing you can do is schedule regular dental cleanings and checkups, as dentists can take care of problems before they get worse.
